Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Sciences

Zakopane is situated in southern Poland, about 100 km to the south of Kraków. It is located in a valley at the foot of the Tatra mountains, the highest mountains in Poland (Mount Rysy 2499 m). The town centre has elevation of about 840 m above sea level, but some parts are even as high as 1000 m above sea level on the slopes of Gubalowka - a hill that surrounds it from the north. Zakopane district is considered to be the most attractive tourist region in Poland. The Tatra mountains, the hilly villages of Podhale, as well as the town itself are ideal places for walks and longer or shorter hikes. In June we expect a mild spring weather with a lot of sunny days and the average day temperatures between 15 - 20 oC. For more information about Zakopane and the hotel see web pages:

A bus transport to Zakopane

The transportation from and to Krakow will be arranged by the Workshop organizers. Participants who would like to use the bus should state that in the online registration form and pay a small extra charge. See conference fees.
Our plan is to have arrivals to Zakopane on Monday (June 12, 2006) in the afternoon and the main conference program will start on Tuesday morning.
The bus provided by the Organizers will depart at 4:00 p.m. on Monday (June 12, 2006) from Krakow (Reymonta street, no. 4, Institute of Physics, Jagiellonian University). The bus will wait in front of the back entrance to the Jagiellonian University Institute of Physics (Oleandry street).
We will finish the Workshop program on Saturday in the morning and the bus departure from Zakopane will be on Saturday (June 17, 2006) after lunch on 2:00 p.m. The bus should arrive in Krakow about 4:00 p.m.

The conference is organized by the Research Centre for Nanometer Scale Science and Advanced Materials (NANOSAM) of the Institute of Physics, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland, in co-operation with the Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society.


ISSRNS is a series of biennial joint Schools and Symposia organized by the Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society. The School consists of several introductory and tutorial lectures addressed to young researchers (M.Sc. and Ph.D. level), as well as to new potential users of the synchrotron radiation (SR) in natural sciences. The Symposium, however, has a format of advanced workshop covering recent developments in instrumentation related to synchrotron radiation sources and providing a forum for reporting the most recent achievements in fundamental and applied research obtained with SR. This meeting will focus on novel SR applications in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine. Detail topics will include:

  1. Instrumentation: synchrotron radiation sources; alternate sources of wide-range, tunable electromagnetic radiation; advances in 3-rd generation insertion devices; novel technical solutions for coherent, infrared radiation; free electron lasers;
  2. Methods: X-ray diffraction and scattering, absorption, fluorescence and photoelectron spectroscopies, imaging, 3-dimensional X-ray holography;
  3. Materials: organic and inorganic solids, thin films and nanostructures.


The School program will be composed of several tutorial lectures (45 minutes speaking time followed by some discussion time) given by distinguished experts in the field. The Symposium will consist of up to 15 invited key-note presentations (30 minutes) and several short oral contributions. Poster sessions will also be organized. The conference language is English.


The Conference Proceedings will be published in a special issue of the refereed, high standard, international journal:
Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, Section B of: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research.

The conference fee is 400 Euro and it covers the cost of full board accommodation (in double room) and meals from (evening arrival) till (morning departure), coffee breaks, social program (excursion and mountaineer folk dinner), a book of abstracts, a single copy of the conference proceedings, and administrative costs. An additional fee of 50 Euro will apply for participants who prefer single room accommodation. A reduced fee for students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) is 250 Euro. An additional charge of 10 Euro will apply for those participants who would like to use our bus transport between Krakow and Zakopane.
The conference fee for accompanying persons is of 250 Euro and it covers the cost of full board accommodation (in double room) and meals from (evening arrival) till (morning departure), and social program (excursion and mountaineer folk dinner).
The late registration fee (paid after the deadline, i.e. April 30, 2006) will be of 450 Euro (300 Euro for students).

To avoid problems with the currency exchange ratio for Polish participants there are the following charges:

Members of the Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society are entitled to 10 % reduction of the fee.

The deadline for the final registration and all payments is on April 30, 2006.
We encourage you for timely registration, since the Geovita hotel capacity is limited and in case of larger number of participants we need to make an advanced booking in neighbouring hotels. Please, note that Zakopane is an attractive tourist site, also in June!
